Those that are more vulnerable should take precaution they deem appropriate and make decisions regarding attending busy areas. Mask are available to guest at our Guest Relations desk. Our staff and volunteers are wearing masks inside the building unless they are behind our custom built sneeze bearers. We have sanitizing stations located in 5 locations throughout the building. We have signage on all doors regarding masks and social distancing, in addition our mitigation steps are also posted. We invested in state of art BioprotectUs System that is effective in killing virus and bacterial for up to 90 days. We purchased a mist unit to sanitize the bathroom and facility on a daily basis.
We purchased commercial ozone units and placed them overhead in location to reduce bacteria and virus contamination. We closed from march 15 through May 15 and worked in close contact with the Departments of State to ensure the Center could be sanitized and protected for our guests. We take the COVID pandemic serious and have worked hard to ensure the Center is as safe for visitors as possible. Our Discovery Room allows guests to see a variety of Pennsylvania wildlife, feel the weight of a set of elk antlers and get an up close look at a native reptiles. Our 4D story theater gives guest the opportunity to get inside Pennsylvania's Elk Herd for a close up look at what goes on in their habitat. In addition we have interactive cameras of the property. Our center has 7 interactive touch screens that allow guests to learn about elk, wildlife and LEED. Mid day is when elk and almost all other wildlife move into the protection of the woods to avoid heat and insects. As noted everywhere, best opportunity for viewing is in the early morning hours and the hours before dark. Your arrival time would have prevented you from seeing elk. When we visited the employees and the visitors inside the building were wearing masks. Outside there are several short hiking trails to view points where elk may be seen depending on the time of day.

A movie can be viewed for a $5 charge on the hour and half hour. There is a gift shop with a wide range of items available including snacks and bottled water and clean restrooms.
The employees I spoke with were very willing to answer questions and offer suggestions as to where and when we could see the elk. There is literature available to help you to plan your visit to the area. Inside there are a variety of educational exhibits geared to children and adults. The Visitor Center is a "green" building set in a stunning location. It was a great place to become oriented to the area and learn about the plants and animals in the Pennsylvania Wilds. My husband and I visited the Elk County Visitor Center as our first stop on the Elk Scenic Drive.
